Melbourne Art Festival April 22-23

Once again Downtown Melbourne will host the annual Melbourne Art Festival on the weekend of April 22-23. The festival is ranked as the 25th best art festival nationwide. It features more than 250 artists from all over the United States and is usually a weekend filled with not only lots of artsy stuff but also the 5K Flamingo Run, activities for kids and of course, plenty of free entertainment.

Unfortunately this is the first time in quite a few years that we won’t be able to attend. Being a resident of the Melbourne and Palm Bay areas for more than 35 years I have attended multiple Melbourne Art Festivals and I have to say that this year I’m not really going to miss it all that much.

While I do enjoy the arts, we’re members of the Brevard Art Museum, I think the Melbourne Art Festival is getting a little stale. What I mean by that is, the same artists have been displaying at the festival for years and years and there just isn’t that much new that we haven’t seen. No offense intended, but you think some of the art that we see every year would have been sold by now. Honestly I’ve been seeing some of the same artwork for 10 years now.

One thing I will miss though is the entertainment on the bill Friday evening at 6:00pm. Pat Travers will be the headliner and he brings back memories from my rock and roll days of many years ago. Even though I don’t listen to much of that kind of music any more, I would have like to see him rock it out one more time. Boom, Boom, Out Go The Lights!
